The Institute for Government in the UK is often an excellent source of insight on government policy making. One of their most interesting projects is Ministers Reflect – an archive of interviews with former UK government ministers, who reflect on the experience of being a Minister in their own words. To date the Institute for Government has conducted more than 70 interviews with former minister from both sides of politics.
This document is a summary of many of the insights from these interviews, and provides some lessons on how to be an effective minister. Many of the insights are directly transferable from the UK context to Australia, and give a sense of what the day to day responsibilities of a minister are and how to get things done.
